For 1,000 years before the Spanish arrived a large and prosperous
Mayan Indian empire flourished in what is now called Guatemala.
From 1524 to 1821 Guatemala was a Spanish colony, briefly part of
Mexico and the United States of Central America. In 1839,
Guatemala was established as a republic. Since 1945, when Jorge
Ubico, a long term dictator was overthrown, a liberal government
has moved the country to a more socialist stance. In 1986 true
civilian government was introduced to Guatemala. @
