  1. For 1,000 years before the Spanish arrived a large and prosperous
  2. Mayan Indian empire flourished in what is now called Guatemala. 
  3. From 1524 to 1821 Guatemala was a Spanish colony, briefly part of
  4. Mexico and the United States of Central America.  In 1839,
  5. Guatemala was established as a republic.  Since 1945, when Jorge
  6. Ubico, a long term dictator was overthrown, a liberal government
  7. has moved the country to a more socialist stance.  In 1986 true
  8. civilian government was introduced to Guatemala.                    @
